'Knock and go around' burglaries spike in South Hills | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
Police have seen a pattern of "knock and go around" burglaries in the South Hills.
Police data shows a surge in burglaries from 8 a.m. to noon on weekdays in the past two weeks.
"The typical approach has been to knock on doors first, and if residents are home offer an excuse for their presence (selling something, looking for someone, looking for work, etc.). It's not unusual for burglars to be looking over your shoulder while talking to you, seeing what's inside that they could steal." Tod Schneider, crime prevention specialist, wrote in an e-mail to the South Eugene Neighbors. "If you get a suspicious visitor at the door, please call us right away at (541) 682-5111. That'll reach a recording, but if you answer the questions by pressing '1' each time, you'll reach a live person 24/7. Of course, in an emergency call 911."
And if you aren't at your door?
"If residents do not answer the door, burglars will then look for a point of entry," Schneider wrote. "They always prefer open doors or windows, but are frequently kicking in doors or breaking glass as well."
Police recommend:
- Turn on your security system and lock your doors
- Work with neighbors to watch each others' homes
- Report any suspicious activity, take pictures or video and take down license plate numbers
- If you are home and someone suspicious knocks, call police at (541) 682-5111.
